Frederic Malle - Rose & Cuir By Jean-Claude Ellena

Year: 2019

Olfactory family: floral, leather

A storm lurks beneath the stillness: the cedar rests on a dark and mysterious IsoBut allorayl qui amara base, used in perfumery at the time of and since forgotten.

In the foreground, an emphatic reinterpretation of the rose; pure, slender, modern without purity. Blended with a unique extraction of timut pepper, bourbon geranium and a note of cassis for freshness and spice.

Yet beneath is a calm storm: vetiver and cedar form an earthy bed of dark, mysterious skin with isobutyl quinoline at the center, an intensely bitter molecule, largely forgotten by its use in the daring perfumery of the jazz era.

Maitre: Jean-Claude Ellene

As a disciple and close friend of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (creator of "Le Parfum de Thérèse"), Jean-Claude Ellena began her career with a minimalist approach to perfumery. Since then, she has developed this approach into his own distinctive style, which is continually out of his way of being elegant and quiet, and has been compared by his contemporaries to watercolor sketches and chamber music. Jean-Claude says that a perfume must be like “a soft caress; nothing must shock, nothing must shout ". Roudnitska's minimalism has never abandoned him, however, and his compositions remain focused on a single ingredient, avoiding repetition.

Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse into a family of perfumers. His training begins at the age of 17, in the most prestigious laboratories - in Grasse, Paris, New York and Geneva - where he always considers himself to be self-taught. Jean-Claude met Frédéric Malle in Roure while he was working on a Bulgari "Eau au Thé Vert". He composed a perfume a year for Editions de Parfums before joining Hermès. Now Frédéric Malle is back as a full-fledged author at Editions de Parfums.

Top notes: geranium, Sichuan pepper, black currant

Middle note: leather, rose

Base notes: cedar, vetiver

Vittoria Profumi's advice: Sparkling and sober, it is a floral composition wrapped in a dramatic but controlled sensuality.
