William Henry Penhaligon, a brilliant native Cornish barber, settled in London around 1868 and opened a barber shop on Jermyn Street, in the immediate vicinity of the famous Hammam Turkish Baths, then frequented by the best London company.

A man of great talent and initiative, in his free moments from work he dedicated himself to experimenting original mixtures of perfumes and essences, so much so that in the early 1870s he had set up a small house with his name that provided Toilet waters, Perfumes and Ointments to exclusive Turkish Bath clientele.

His first perfume and also his favorite, dedicated precisely to this demanding and refined clientele, was born in 1872 and was called Hammam Bouquet. This was followed by many others including, still in great demand, Blenheim Bouquet used by Sir Winston Churchill.
