Ralf Schwieger once took part in a perfume competition that Frédéric Malle had organized for young perfumers. Frédéric tasted their perfumes one by one, blindfolded, until he reached Ralf's sketch of what would become Lipstick Rose, and Ralf was chosen to join Editions de Parfums.

Having spent his childhood in Germany exploring forests and absorbing all their unusual smells, Ralph is inclined to create perfumes with unexpected personalities. She describes his attitude towards the creation of perfumes as a game in two parts, the first intellectual or conceptual, and the second longer one of sensory research. Her scents of him, as a result, are both cerebral and intuitive.
